5. Add 2 ½ cups of colorful vegetables daily. Choose red, orange and dark-green colored vegetables. Include peas and beans as well in your daily diet.
6. Use vegetable-based oils made from soybean, peanut, olive, corn or canola. These kinds of oils contain good amounts of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. This will help reduce the intake of solid fats and trans fat.
7. Eat less of foods that contain added sugars, refined grains, sodium, and solid fats including trans fat.
8. Consume no more than 2300 milligrams of sodium per day. For people over the age of 51, the intake can be reduced to 1500 milligrams. The same applies to people with a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. Using salt only when absolutely needed will help reduce the intake of sodium. Herbs, spices and certain fruit juices can also be used to replace salt.
